Chinese artist Lyu Yanxiang, born 1984, belongs to a younger generation of contemporary painters whose work explores the potential of figurative painting at the intersection of narrative and subjective perception. He gained particular recognition through his 2024 solo exhibition INFP – Flowing Nature. The exhibition demonstrates a painterly approach that moves beyond linear storytelling, instead emphasizing the ambiguity of the image and the openness of individual interpretation. Lyu primarily works in oil on canvas and occasionally incorporates collage-like elements into his compositions. Some Works combine figurative imagery with symbolically charged pictorial spaces. Rather than presenting clearly defined narratives, these paintings evoke associative relationships between human figures, natural motifs, and psychological states, inviting viewers to construct their own interpretations. From an art historical perspective, Lyu Yanxiang’s oeuvre can be situated within the broader context of contemporary Chinese painting, in which traditional figurative practices are reinterpreted through present-day concerns with identity, perception, and subjectivity. A defining characteristic of his work is the shift from narrative coherence toward a reflection on the act of seeing itself. The human figure functions less as the vehicle of a specific story than as a medium for emotional and symbolic condensation. This openness of visual language allows for multiple readings and reflects the growing importance of individual experience in contemporary Chinese painting.
