How might an artistic journey to the ‘Eternal City’ of Rome be conceived today?
What spaces for action and imagination can be explored in the face of today’s global challenges? To whom does ‘antiquity’ belong? How are the ‘North’ and ‘South’ historically constituted? How do we experience and conceive of the relationship between nature and culture today?
Artists from the Dakić Class for Film and Video at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts embarked on a real or imaginary journey to Rome for this exhibition.
Using a variety of media, they explore spaces for action and imagination.
A final publication will accompany the project, which unfolded between 2023 and 2026 at various locations in Düsseldorf and Rome.
ROM. ROM? ROM! is conceived as an artistic research project, a structure of spatial and temporal overlaps which, through an engagement with historical references, opens up a new perspective on current issues and creates space for experimental, collaborative and process-oriented working methods.
The combination of further developments and new works reflects the complexity of the participating artists – their ability to think in ways that permeate space and to continually reposition themselves. The research-based nature of the exhibition allows questions to be raised rather than answers provided.
