Frank Bauer | Transit
Jun 13, 2026 - Aug 01, 2026

The exhibition “TRANSIT” by Düsseldorf-based painter Frank Bauer brings together works that are situated in a state of transition. The works take their cue from Bauer’s photographs of everyday, often mundane situations that suggest a universal quality: waiting halls, airports, aeroplanes, transit areas. Places that are not themselves designed for permanence, but rather describe conditions of transit. Spaces of waiting, passage and interruption, yet at the same time places of passing through and lingering. Yet these images demand precisely this pause. In the painterly translation, fleeting moments in transit are made visible without being fully fixed. In Bauer’s painting, the motifs of airport scenes are not reproduced but transformed. A multitude of different prints serve as his source material. These are combined, shifted and further developed through painting. The proximity to photorealism forms the basis from which Bauer renegotiates the conditions of perception and image construction into an individual reflection of reality. The work “Startbahn, Düsseldorf” is based on a photographic source image that is itself blurred. In the painting process, this blurring is not regarded as a flaw or corrected, but is incorporated as an essential element. Whilst large parts of the pictorial space remain blurred, individual points of light stand out with great precision and are visually condensed. This shift in contrast is not a representation of reality, but a deliberate staging. The dissolution of the visible creates an effect of depth. The points of light appear to cross the edge of the canvas and spill out of the picture. The canvas is understood as a grid that structures, organises and gives rhythm to the image. Lines, rectangles and recurring geometric elements define the picture plane and create a precisely balanced composition. These are less constructed arrangements than rather constellations found in the photographed moment. A photograph only becomes interesting for the painterly process when it appears unspectacular or banal as a photograph in its own right. ‘Heathrow’ is based on several photographic prints of the same crowded waiting hall, each capturing different lighting conditions. One print shows a lighter background against a dark foreground, in which people remain barely discernible; another shifts this distribution of light once more. Bauer reorganises the relationships in his painterly treatment. The result is an image that does not exist in this form in photography. People appear as anonymous crowds; spaces dissolve into light, colour and blurriness. The overall atmosphere takes centre stage. Alongside elements of composition and contrast, the sky above airports is a recurring motif. This reveals a fundamental limitation of painting in relation to photography. Certain colour values appear in photographic sources with an intensity that cannot be precisely reproduced through mixing. Fine colour stripes and fluid transitions between yellow and blue thus present both a technical and a sensory challenge. Caspar David Friedrich’s depictions of the sky, in particular, have had a lasting influence on Frank Bauer. As in “Heraklion Airport”, Bauer deliberately transfers these observations to his depictions of airport skies. The photograph, expanded onto the canvas, becomes a panoramic image in which the sky appears not merely as a background, but as an independent field of painterly exploration. With “TRANSIT”, Frank Bauer invites us to pause our journey: to linger for a moment in images that capture the everyday whilst simultaneously letting it slip away. What remains is a moment in an image that perhaps reveals less than it evokes. Sena-Marie Cirit
